Prohibition
On January 29th, 1919, the US Congress ratified the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibited alcohol sales of any kind throughout the nation. Consumption and possession of this substance were illegal, which angered many citizens. These motivated numerous gangsters like Al Capone to open Speakeasies, or illegal bars, and many people to create their own alcohol at home called moonshine, which was much more harmful to one's health than the alcohol previously sold in stores.
The Ku Klux Klan grew during this time period as well, and took the law in their own hands by lynching their victims, who were mostly African Americans, however other groups such as Catholics or Jews were affected as well.
